Seventeen’s J x W make their unit debut with first single album This Man
What a birthday present! I’ve been having quite a horrible week and judging by this Monday, I don’t think this week looks that promising either. However, I was so excited when I initially saw that this unit debut would be dropping today because what better way to start your working week than with your favourite people providing you with some great music? If you’ve been following our blog, I’m sure you know that SEVENTEEN are a big deal here and Wonwoo is my best friend (real) so the excitement for this release is honestly through the roofs! Let’s dive deeper into the first single album of Wonwoo and Jeonghan This Man and review it together.
If you know me, I’m sure you know Wonwoo x Mingyu’s Bittersweet has been one of my absolute favourites ever since its release and it really made me intrigued into what future units/duos will bring musically to the table. I was shocked that Jeonghan and Wonwoo would be joining hands for a single album (pre-enlistment gift maybe?) but at the same time absolutely thrilled because I love them both and I think their energies match well musically. I was expecting a darker concept and a darker sound as well but I didn’t expect Last Night to be so groovy. The moment I heard the snippet of it from the highlight medley I knew that I would definitely be obsessing over this title track and even on the first listen right now I’m loving it. I think Wonwoo’s singing voice really suits this kind of style and the laid-back, almost sensual-sounding rap brings another level to the song as well. Jeonghan is also a severely underrated vocalist and this kind of smooth, elegant atmosphere suits him so much. The verses are very solid, with a promising underlying melody, but that catchy chorus definitely takes the crown – I especially like the second part of it. The instrumental plays a big role in this track and I think it definitely achieved its goal – showcasing a mysterious yet catchy energy until the very end. I also really enjoyed the bridge and think it provided a nice melodic break from the main hook. The music video is, as expected, a big part of this whole experience and I love the darker atmosphere it brings as well as the stunning stylistic choices.
I will, as expected, be a bit biased and highlight Wonwoo’s solo track from the album Leftover which really had me surprised during the highlight medley. I don’t know what I was expecting but an emotional ballad was not it and I really like the song as a whole now that it’s fully out. Maybe there’s a bias sympathy playing a role here as well but I think Wonwoo showcased his versatility so nicely through these two tracks in general – thinking how he went from LALALI to Leftover in the span of just a few weeks is incredible. I also like Jeonghan’s solo track Beautiful Monster, which is melodic and slightly upbeat.
All in all, Last Night did not disappoint and I’m so excited to see SEVENTEEN at Lollapalooza this September!
