Kdrama Review: Miss Night and Day on Netflix

K-dramas over the years touch upon various genres and styles from historical, romance, comedy, thrilling, and horror. I personally am a sucker for rom-coms with true crime, this is exactly what this new Netflix K-drama gave to me. A K-drama I was keeping up with throughout its ongoing release with Netflix was titled 'Miss Night and Day' 낮과 밤이 다른 그녀 starring Lee Jungeun and Jeong Eunji (member of the Kpop group Apink). Miss Night and Day started by telling the story of Lee Mijin, a 28-year-old young woman who faces many hardships to obtain permanent employment. This was so relatable to me being a young woman looking for successful and meaningful employment, many of us have jobs for the sole purpose of income, not fulfillment. We see Lee Mijin being scammed while wearing her costume from a film shoot where she's cast as a background actor. She was fortunate to run into well-known and intimidating prosecutor Gye Jiung who recently transferred from Seoul to Seohan. While Mijin is at her lowest, breaking down she takes all of her study materials and books into a fire. Before everything can burn, a rainstorm comes and a peculiar orange and white cat causes trouble leading Mijin to fall down the family well. What happens next is nearly like a fairytale, by night she is Mijin, 28 but in the day she is an older woman in her 50's.

Lee Mijin (Jeong Eunji) in episode one of Miss Night and Day.

The first episode was enough to pull me into this wild story, with empathy for Mijin and looking for answers in the show. The bulk of the show focuses on how Lee Mijin renamed Lim Sun for her older state during the day, as she navigates working at the Seohan Prosecutors District Office helping none other than Gye Jiung solve a series of missing persons cases dating back 20 years ago. We look into Gye's backstory and his attachment to this particular case. Gye is a handsome, workaholic who strives for perfectionist, we see him clashing with a female prosecutor named Ms. Tak who will subtly flirt, Along the way we see outright comedic moments, subtle romantic gestures, thrilling detective work, and friendly connections. The main character is authentically human and realistic despite a fairytale of aging between night and day, along with strong parents with amusing personalities, an influencer friend that has a heart of gold, and Gye's fellow prosecutor who adds into the comedic moments, the show has a stellar cast.

Shown from Left to Right:
Yoon Byunghee (Ju Byungduk), Jeong Eunji (Lee Mijin), Kim Ayoung (Do Gapyeong), Choi Jinhyuk (Gye Jiung)

This show was very well done, with all characters performing at their peak, the viewer felt apart of the story with each episode building upon the main case. I can say I am the biggest Mijin supporter after watching this. The ending left nothing to be desired, while I don't want to spoil the ending I will just say the pain and angst we sat through was worth it.
