FNC’s boy group P1Harmony are here with their new mini album SAD SONG and title song of the same name.
Ever since Do It Like This, I have really started to majorly appreciate the artistry and the sound that P1Harmony brings and it even led to me finally truly appreciating their previous releases too, specifically their debut Siren. P1Harmony have not only established themselves as a group with versatile, fun, and stylistically unique title tracks but also a group that somehow always manages to bring us hidden gems on their albums. Sometimes artists put their all into their title tracks, but with P1Harmony I feel like a lot of that special emotion can be genuinely found right in their b-sides, every single comeback. That’s why I still lovingly listen to Butterfly, I Am You, Different Song For Me, and Before the Dawn (can you tell I love emotional tracks?). P1Harmony have quickly become one of my favourites, both when it comes to their music and their personalities and I’m so excited to check out their newest mini album SAD SONG because I know it will be my style. Let’s review!
I think P1Harmony have really created a recognizable sound and style and from the previews, I could already tell SAD SONG was going to be a combination of their melodic and upbeat moments which I love the most. They always have the perfect amount of all the elements – enough melody to really carry the song until the end, a smooth transition between rap and vocal sections, a catchy hook to elevate the energy of the song, and a fun choreography to top it all. I think SAD SONG really does all of these elements their justice because I am already on my fourth listen of the song and it keeps getting better and better. It’s very fun that the song keeps an upbeat tempo right from the beginning because it also allows, for example, Intak’s rap section in the first part to enter the song so smoothly. I also enjoy that the chorus is somewhat split between the vocalists and the rappers. With the name SAD SONG, you’d think we would be getting something more mellow but I love the approach to this topic – it’s like you’re still bound to get up and continue dancing even after all the heartaches. I’m in for it! It’s the universal truth that nothing helps beat sadness and loneliness more than a good dance party. I think Jump and Doom Du Doom have a strong competition for the best P1Harmony title in my heart, we will see who will win. The music video also deserves a mention because I love the way it’s filmed and the different sets used, especially the rain scenes during the finale. Nothing says angst more than rain and P1Harmony know the classic moves.
It’s needless to say the newest mini album comes with some stunning b-sides I will be playing a lot this month. I’ve already said that I enjoy emotional tracks (at least in their melody) but this new album is really such a massive pleasant surprise for me because I am enjoying all the b-sides on the first listen. The song that caught my attention right away has to be the stunning, upbeat, anthemic Last Call – are we hearing this nostalgic melody that the song has? It’s so good and I feel like this might be my favourite track from the album as of right now. I just love the way that acoustic-like instrumental slowly grows into a full-on anthemic chant of a chorus. Such old-school k-pop vibes. However, the other two songs I’d highlight as my current favourites are definitely It’s Alright (more on the laid-back side of things with some gorgeous vocal moments) and Welcome To (which gives some serious dystopian movie OST energy from start to finish, truly evoking hopeful emotions in me). I feel like the new album really brings us a different side of P1Harmony, some different energy that absolutely suits them but also confirms their versatility. Worth checking out without a doubt.
P1Harmony continue to create their own way, sound, and style and I think they have a formula that truly works for them. This new mini album is another proof of that. It’s fantastic seeing them blossom into more confident artists and experimenting with their music in the way they like while still polishing their skills and improving every time. So excited for the promotions of this era.
