Day6 Sungjin Introduces Us To His Check Pattern

Day6’s Sungjin drops his solo debut album 30 and title song Check Pattern.

I love DAY6 content – always keep it coming. Sungjin’s solo debut has been a long time coming considering he’s one of the most unique, as well as strongest vocalists of his generation and someone who keeps being criminally underrated. We are big DAY6 fans here on the blog and I always feel a certain kind of bias towards them but I think it’s justified as they really do provide us with quality music whether it’s group, unit, or solo. I’m very interested to see what Sungjin decided to pursue musically as a soloist so let’s dive right into Check Pattern and see what it’s all about. I’m ready for the mature, emotional sound I know Sungjin will definitely provide – let’s review.

Check Pattern starts off quite slow, making me wonder if it would eventually pick up the energy as the emotions rise higher and higher. I’m happy to say that yes, Check Pattern does exactly that. It’s definitely a song meant to be understood and felt, and you can see that from the start. I like the way the tempo, the energy, and the melody itself really gradually get higher and more dramatic. It makes for a really enjoyable listening experience from the first listen. Of course, it’s absolutely needless to say that it’s Sungjin’s rich and mature vocal tone that really seals the deal here. Sungjin’s voice is one of the most remarkable ones of his generation and it’s so satisfying to hear it showcased like this. Check Pattern is a solid choice for a solo debut and suits Sungjin’s sound and style really well.

From the b-sides on his solo album, I was really interested to hear the MonoTree produced I don’t wanna do anything and I’m so glad to say that it’s definitely my favourite track on the album. There’s just something about this song that brings a certain nostalgic atmosphere to me, and I’m a sucker for that. It’s more on the upbeat side of things but still maintains the mature vibe of the album. The nostalgic, retro energy appears again in Easy which is another b-side I really liked! However, another absolute stand-out on the album has to be I don’t wanna lose. The stunning, haunting vocals? The dramatic, emotional instrumental? Oh, wow, what a track. This song actually reminds me a lot of DAY6’s sound and I could totally hear them performing this together. Sungjin did such a fantastic job here because I had goosebumps while listening to this track. Make sure to check it out!

Congrats Sungjin, let’s make more good music in the future!
