The Judge From Hell (2024) - Series Review

The Judge From Hell is, overall, a captivating fantasy thriller that brings an unexpected twist to the genre. From the moment it began, the premise hooked me with its unique blend of supernatural elements and moral dilemmas, making me eager to see what would happen next. The show’s incorporation of law and justice in the context of demons was clever and intriguing. The way these seemingly contradictory elements were tied together added a layer of complexity that kept the story engaging.

The contradictory nature of the show is most evident in Bitna’s character. Initially, she appears unstoppable—firm in her judgment, executing her verdicts with precision. However, as her feelings for Daon develop, she begins to hesitate, torn between her duty and her growing emotional attachment. This inner conflict was an interesting and vital part of her character development. While it did add depth, it also slightly diminished the sense of urgency and excitement, as Bitna’s indecisiveness sometimes slowed the momentum of the plot.

On the other hand, the interesting aspect of the show lies in the way Bitna carries out justice for the criminals she judges. Her trials are a reflection of the moral principle, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” The way she delivers justice to the killers she sets free is brutal yet fitting. If I were in the victim’s family’s shoes, I would probably want to see the same fate befall the killers. However, the trials, while impactful, did feel somewhat drawn out at times, with some episodes spending more time on them than necessary. Despite that, the trials still held emotional weight and were an integral part of the story.

One aspect that really stood out, but I didn’t mention in my episode reviews, was the music. The soundtrack played a crucial role in establishing the show’s atmosphere. It wasn’t necessarily magical in tone, but it had a distinctly demonic sound that complemented the dark, supernatural themes of the series. The music also adapted to the emotional range of the show, with haunting tracks during the more intense moments, and softer, sadder pieces that added emotional depth during the more reflective scenes. The balance of intense and somber tones in the OST enhanced the overall experience and helped convey the series’ emotional beats.

As for the cast, Park Shin-hye was perfectly suited for her role. She brought a fierce, brave energy to Bitna, and her performance captured the internal conflict of the character beautifully. Kim Jae-young, on the other hand, was a bit more divisive for me. At times, his character’s actions felt a bit irritating, especially when Daon quickly pieced together that Bitna was behind the Geehna killings. The premature reveal of this information didn’t sit well with me, as it diminished some of the tension and intrigue that could have built around Daon’s discovery. This early reveal also made me more frustrated with Daon’s character, as it felt like a plot point that could have been executed more gradually.

The episode's ending left things on a cliffhanger, which, depending on the future of the show, could be seen as either a clever lead-in for a second season or a frustrating conclusion. If a season 2 is confirmed, then the ending works well to set up new conflicts and mysteries. However, if there is no continuation, the abrupt conclusion could be seen as unsatisfying.

Overall, if I had to rate the series, I would give it 4 out of 5 stars. The fantasy elements were well-executed, especially with the intriguing organizational structure of Hell and the mysteries surrounding characters like Stana and Kylum, who are central to the serial killings. The show did a great job building its fantastical world and keeping the audience invested in the central plot. However, there were moments when the pacing could have been more concise. Some scenes felt stretched out, and a tighter narrative could have created more room for additional, intriguing subplots or character development. Despite these minor issues, the show delivered a solid fantasy experience with a strong premise, interesting characters, and an engaging blend of moral dilemmas and supernatural elements.
