SHINee’s Onew returns with his fourth mini album Connection and title song Winner.
I’ve really loved Onew’s musical direction since he has signed with the new label and I feel like he’s managed to explore quite a few different styles while still maintaining his recognizable sound and emotion that makes his songs always unique. I’m eternally biased when it comes to him because he’s my absolute favourite but I think it’s also objective that it’s hard to miss when you’re one of k-pop’s best vocalists to date – whether it’s a ballad or a more upbeat, groovy sound, Onew has really managed to shine and showcase his talents which we are already witnessing only six days into the new year. Maestro made it onto my Top 24 list of ’24 easily and I know that Onew’s musical output in 2025 will be just as amazing. Let’s review Winner.
Winner is my cup of tea right from the start. It has that special emotion and nostalgic, wistful feeling that only Onew manages to portray perfectly while still remaining melodic and offering a strong enough hook to remember it by. I knew this would be an emotional release from the teasers, and considering he took part in writing and producing all the songs on the album, I knew we would be in for an absolutely quality treat. First of all, Winner’s music video seems like a whole drama? It’s emotional, but also gives you an uplifting feeling that the lyrics further confirm – I’m not going back / As long as traces of my fights remain is definitely the part that resonates the most with me and the part I keep replaying while writing this review. If there’s anyone who would be able to bring a heart-warming and inspirational energy to the table, it’s definitely Onew – his voice is strong enough to portray these feelings without a problem, but it’s the smoothness of it all that really seals the deal and offers an additional, gentle layer of the song to the listener. The chorus is definitely the star of the song, backed up by a stunning instrumental making Winner a true power ballad with, at times, even rock-like elements. This style is made for Onew’s voice and style – it’s just beautiful. I think there’s no one more worthy of being our first review of 2025.
We have already heard Yay from the new album, but I have to say that the rest of it is just as great. I had a feeling that the biggest contenders for my favourite b-side would be Conversation and Boy and I was absolutely right. I like that he goes into a more groovy and upbeat sound for the album because it suits him so much and brings a much-needed funky energy for this cold January. Although I really do think that Winner is the best song on the album, followed by Yay, I’d definitely recommend the rest of the album if you’re in the mood for something that will make you move your shoulders a bit. Conversation is such a fun little track that really had my attention on the first listen. Would love to see a performance of this song!
