SOLO DEBUT: GI-DLE’s Minnie Proves That She Is Her

GI-DLE’s Minnie makes her official solo debut with Her and title song of the same name.

I really enjoy Minnie’s solo music, especially her OSTs, and her pre-release track was such an unexpectedly alluring track that made me even more excited for her mini-album. IDLE girls are all so talented and it’s a joy seeing them express their individual colours through their music, whether it’s group or solo releases. They’ve all grown a lot as artists, gained confidence that comes with talent and maturity and have really turned out to be a true girl group power on the current scene. Minnie is also my favourite so I’m looking forward to seeing what her mini-album Her brings us today. Either way, I know both my eyes and my ears will be blessed so let’s review!

Her is a fun, upbeat track that puts you in a good mood with its melody, although the lyrics might suggest the opposite. I agree with Lina that the song definitely has that recognizable GI-DLE sound and style, with some special Minnie charm. It’s catchy, yet simple in its musical approach. I feel like it’s definitely an earworm although I’d like to see how it will age – considering the chorus is a bit repetitive, it might be a hit-or-miss for some listeners. I think Minnie delivers this kind of message really well and it’s nice to see her enjoy her solo adventures. The music video is stunning, too. It’s definitely what I expected from Minnie – a dark, sensual, cinematic atmosphere that plays with lights and colours. It actually fits the lyrics of Her although the melody is very upbeat so it fools you. Her is a catchy track, but I think a darker sound suits Minnie a tiny bit better, and would like to see her lean into that direction sometime in the future again. Her will be on my playlist but I feel like I’ll be going back to Blind Eyes Red a bit more.

I agree with Lina that Cherry Sky is the definite highlight of the mini-album and the b-side you should definitely check out. It’s just the kind of sound I love hearing from Minnie, something catchy but still a little bit alluring in its melody. Another standout track for me is her collaboration with WayV’s Ten which was something I was really looking forward to! Their vocals match so well and this kind of upbeat, dreamy melody is perfect for both of them – you feel like you’re floating on a cloud while listening to Obsessed, in the best possible way. Pop excellence right here, a song I hope we can see them perform live together soon!

Congrats on your debut Minnie, looking forward to all of your future projects!

Okay so for those of you who care we finally figured out the image problem and I would just like to say that WordPress sucks. Okay with that out of the way let’s focus on today’s debut because Minnie is finally here with her mini-album. I have to admit I enjoy the fact that these girls are all getting their chance to work on solo stuff and showing us their unique colors. I really enjoyed Minnie’s pre-release for this mini and was looking forward to seeing what she has in store for us with a bold statement song called Her. We all wanna be Her at some point and today is Minnie’s chance to be that so let’s review.

Her is probably what I expected this song to sound like and it kind of feels like this could have easily been another GI-DLE single but with a touch more of Minnie’s color. I quite enjoy the toned-down mystery around Her. It is a quite sensual and alluring song and it fits her visuals and talent. I especially think that Her underlines Minnie’s vocal color very pleasantly. But that’s as far as it gets Her isn’t the most exciting or mind-blowing song out there. It is quite a decent debut song and I enjoy it, I am gonna put it onto my playlist but that’s about it. I love the music video and its visuals though she looks gorgeous.

I love to see all the collabs on this album and I was very excited to dive into the song Drive U Crazy which features Yuqi as we are all big Yuqi fans here on the blog. I do quite like the song but the song that caught my ear immediately was Cherry Sky a stunning song! But the rest of the album is really nice too Valentine’s Dream offers a nice ballad. It’s Okay is an emotional mid-tempo song. Album closer Obsession featuring Ten is really good though you can feel both of these talented idols coming together to bring us something magical! I think this is a solid debut for Minnie and I can’t wait to dive more into the music!
