A decade into his acting career, EXO‘s leader is trading idol-adjacent roles for something grittier an action drama about a son unraveling his father’s hidden past, under a director fresh off a Busan International Film Festival opener.
For an idol who’s spent over a decade proving he’s more than a side career in acting, EXO’s Suho just landed a role that cuts close to the bone: a young man chasing a music dream while reality keeps pulling him somewhere darker.
SM Entertainment confirmed on October 30 that Suho will headline the upcoming action drama Father’s Secret (아버지의 비밀), directed by Yoon Jae-ho. “Suho is making his screen comeback,” the agency said. “Through Father’s Secret, he’ll showcase an even deeper acting range.”

Father’s Secret follows an ordinary young man who gets pulled into unexpected danger after discovering a hidden truth about his father’s past. Suho plays Tae-sung, the son at the center of that unraveling a character wrestling with the pull of a musician’s dream against the weight of a reality that won’t let him pursue it, before growing through hardship into something stronger.
It’s a premise that leans directly into territory Suho hasn’t fully explored on screen before: not an idol playing a musician as shorthand for his real-life identity, but a character whose creative ambition is actively in conflict with the plot’s central danger. That tension between art and survival — gives him a meatier emotional arc than most of his earlier roles offered.
He’ll be joined by a seasoned supporting cast: Park Hee-soon, Ra Mi-ran, Han Ji-eun, and Park Myung-hoon. Park Hee-soon, in particular, will play opposite Suho as his father, anchoring the film’s central father-son relationship a pairing that puts a decade-plus character actor known for morally complex, weathered roles directly across from Suho in the film’s most emotionally loaded dynamic.
Suho’s Slow-Burn Case for Range
This isn’t a debut vanity project it’s the latest step in a screen career Suho has been quietly building since well before EXO’s global ascent cemented. He’s appeared in television dramas and films including One Way Trip (2016), The Universe’s Star (2017), Rich Man (2018), Middle School Girl A (2018), How Are U Bread (2020), Behind Your Touch (2023), and the historical series Missing Crown Prince (2024), where he carried a lead role as a crown prince navigating court intrigue.
What’s notable about that filmography is its range: period drama, youth coming-of-age stories, romantic comedy, and now an action-driven family thriller. Where many idol-actors settle into a single lane often soft romantic leads tailored to their existing fan base Suho has steadily rotated through genres, using each project to test a different register. Father’s Secret continues that pattern, and arguably raises the stakes: action dramas built around father-son reckonings demand a rawer, more physically and emotionally grounded performance than the lighter fare that’s made up much of his earlier résumé.

Director Yoon Jae-ho brings his own credibility to the project. He’s best known for Beautiful Days (2018), a drama following a North Korean defector who abandons her husband and young son for a chance at a better life abroad, only for the buried truth to resurface fourteen years later when her now-grown son tracks her down. The film was selected as the opening film of the 23rd Busan International Film Festival one of the most significant curatorial honors in Asian cinema, reserved for works festival programmers consider most representative of a given year’s Korean filmmaking.
That selection placed Yoon in rarefied company: BIFF’s opening slot has historically gone to directors capable of balancing emotional intimacy with technical polish on a festival-size stage. For Father’s Secret, Yoon appears to be returning to a theme that clearly interests him — hidden family pasts resurfacing to upend the present but shifting the genre engine from quiet drama to action, with Suho’s character on the receiving end of the generational reckoning this time.
Why This Casting Matters
EXO’s members have increasingly used solo acting work to build identities distinct from the group’s idol framing, and Suho as EXO’s leader has arguably been the most consistent about treating it as a genuine second craft rather than a promotional sideline. A father-son action drama from a BIFF-opening director is a meaningfully heavier swing than most of what idol-actors are offered even a decade into a parallel acting career, and it suggests both SM Entertainment and Yoon see something in Suho’s range worth building a serious ensemble drama around rather than a lighter vehicle.
Father’s Secret begins principal photography next month, with a release targeted for 2026. For fans who’ve watched Suho methodically expand his range project by project, this one looks like it could be the performance that finally reframes the conversation from “EXO’s leader, who also acts” to simply: an actor.
